2. Guard the Three-Point Line

Three-point defense has been Rhode Island’s calling card over the past several seasons, but it’s been slipping as of late. After ranking 21st nationally in defending the arc a season ago, the Rams have slipped to 125th this season, a considerable dip that has cost them a few times.

Rhody has allowed double-digit made threes in two of their three A-10 games to date including 13 against a Saint Joseph’s team that loves to hoist ’em. That said, URI made it tough on their non-conference opponents from deep, so they’re certainly capable.

Richmond isn’t known as a prolific team from long range, but they certainly have some shooters. Tyler Burton, Blake Francis, and yes, big man Grant Golden can all connect from beyond the arc. As can Gilyard, although his percentage (27.1) is down this year compared to his usual average. Rhody can’t rely on him to stay cold, so running guys off the line and closing out needs to be a priority. The Spiders have a solid all-around offense, but keeping a hand in the face of shooters always helps.

The Rams could use it to pick up their defensive intensity in general. Yes, they’re the #2 rated defense in the A-10 within conference play, but the usual energy that many expect from David Cox teams has been lacking. Tough man-to-man, forcing turnovers, and general physicality will all need to be there against Richmond.
