Kentucky at Florida: 2020-21 storylines for SEC matchup
Coach Calipari’s goals
The most trend-worthy thing to do in college basketball at the moment is to criticize Coach Calipari. For those who dislike his approach of collecting highly ranked freshmen, then taking credit for them being drafted into the NBA, then doing it all over again the following season, for those certain individuals, the struggles Kentucky had in their non-conference schedule is enjoyable and perhaps viewed as deserving.
The reality is Coach Calipari should not be criticized but celebrated. With under eight percent of their minutes and just seven percent of their scoring returning from last season, the Wildcats consist of six freshmen and one redshirt freshman who were all ranked in the top100 on the Recruiting Services Consensus Index.
Once the two transfers are taken into consideration, there should be no wonder why Wildcats’ offense has no identity. With the clear talent at his disposal, Coach Calipari is still trying to get his team to run offensive sets instead of just running the ball and trying to score based on their skill.
Coach Calipari is known for using the non-conference schedule to prepare for the conference schedule and to use the conference schedule to prepare for March. The danger this year is there is a possibility they do not make it to the tournament. Coach Calipari needs to put his coaching morals aside, let his team use their top 100 skill to get some wins in order to buy some time to get more practice in. The other strategy would have been to pull the Wildcats from all non-conference games in order to practice, a strategy already used by a Hall of Fame coach this season.
