NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target Texas Tech transfer Nimari Burnett
Maryland Terrapins
The Terps are another team with a good history of guard development, even if the win-loss record this season isn’t showing it. With senior Darryl Morsell leaving and leading scorer/passer Eric Ayala possibly going pro if he keeps playing this well, there would be both a need and a match for a talent such as Burnett to come in and have an immediate impact.
As someone who comes from the Big Ten area, it wouldn’t be a surprise if nearly all of the programs in the conference reaches out to Burnett. But few of them tend to be guard-heavy and guard-reliant as Maryland, with head coach Mark Turgeon looking for the next batch after this current crop of veterans departs.
Memphis Tigers
The Tigers don’t have any senior guards on the roster currently, with Alex Lomax, Landers Nolley, Boogie Ellis, and Lester Quinones all potentially able to come back. But this core group of guards just hasn’t been the offensive force needed for Memphis to be very good, at just 6-4 overall.
Adding Burnett would help for competition, or even replace one of the guards such as Nolley who could be going pro. It’s hard to envision the Tigers running it back if they’re not an NCAA Tournament team and head coach Penny Hardaway loves to bring in transfers.
