1. Houston Cougars

No surprise here, the only team to be ranked in the AP Top 25 is at the top of AAC basketball power rankings and has been for the whole season. They have two of the conference’s top scorers in Quentin Grimes and Marcus Sasser (both above 16 PPG) and looks like the Cougars are once again the most well-rounded team in the league.

They’re one of the highest-scoring teams in the conference and the lone loss for the Cougars was on the road at Tulsa by a score of 65-64 in the final seconds, in part because of a very unusual poor shooting day from the offensive leaders of Grimes and Sasser. It may benefit the Cougars long-term to get the first loss out of the way, even in a grueling fashion.

Kelvin Sampson has built a powerhouse team that has yet to have a chance to show off its full potential. In his seventh season at Houston, he’s guided his team to a 20-win season all but once and is on pace to keep the streak going.

Houston hasn’t made it beyond the Sweet 16 since 1984  when the Phi Slamma Jamma teams went to three-straight. We might be entering a new era of Houston dominance.
