12. Maryland Terrapins (7-6, 2-5 Big Ten)

By virtue of their record, Maryland deserves to be in the 12th spot in the power rankings. By virtue of their play on the court recently, the Terrapins may be ready to move higher.

The Terrapins have lost three of their last four, but their win was in their most recent game, a road upset of No. 12 Illinois, 66-63. Prior to that (and their three losses), Maryland also knocked off No. 6 Wisconsin on the road, 70-64.

Perhaps there would be a different conversation taking place if Maryland didn’t get their doors blown in by Iowa at home, losing by 22 points to the Hawkeyes. A third signature win in conference play may have been enough to spur Maryland into the top half of the conference.

They’ll have a chance to get that signature win soon, though. Following a postponement of their game with Nebraska, the Terrapins next take the court on Tuesday, when they have a road tilt against undefeated Michigan. (Note: They’ve added a game against DII Wingate for Friday, but that’s not going to do much for the Terps’ resume.) A win against the Wolverines would grant Maryland spoiler status in the Big Ten for the rest of the year.
