Big East Basketball: UConn, Seton Hall remains in hunt of latest power rankings
11. DePaul Blue Demons (1-4, 0-4 Big East)
DePaul was eager to get back on the court after being the last power conference team to play their first game this season. The Blue Demons waited almost one month until December 23rd to play their first game.
All went well during their first game of the season against Western Illinois. The Blue Demons shot 36-for-61 (59 percent) and won 91-72.
During their second game, DePaul played with heart and gave Providence a major gut check. The Blue Demons hung with the Friars all game long and took a three-point lead with 16 seconds left, only to surrender a game-tying three-point shot to A.J. Reeves to send the game into overtime and eventually a second overtime. Providence was able to escape away with the victory 95-90 in double overtime.
After posting 91 and 90 points during their first two games, the scoring has gone downhill for DePaul. The Blue Demons were held to a season-low 53 points on Monday in a 60-53 loss against UConn, which was without their star shooting guard James Bouknight.
The main trouble this season for DePaul has been with turnovers. The Blue Demons have recorded at least 16 total turnovers in all five of their games this season. DePaul entered Monday’s matchup against UConn averaging a conference-high 17.3 turnovers per game.
The Huskies managed to force DePaul into a season-high 24 total turnovers with the Blue Demons starting backcourt of senior point guard, Charlie Moore (13 ppg, 4.8 apg) and junior guard, Javon Freeman-Liberty (14.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.4 apg), combining for 11 of DePaul’s 24 turnovers on Monday.
DePaul’s matchup versus Georgetown was canceled on Monday due to Georgetown’s program going on pause. The Blue Demons were able to fill an extra non-conference game on Saturday hosting Valparaiso. Then, DePaul will take on Butler in their next conference game at home on Tuesday.
