8. St. John’s Red Storm (7-6, 2-5 Big East)

After allowing 97 points on Saturday against Creighton, the Red Storm were able to bounce back on Tuesday, winning 69-57 at home against Butler. This win allowed the Red Storm to remain .500 or better with their overall record this season.

The positive sign about Tuesday night’s victory was that St. John’s allowed the Bulldogs to score 57 points while forcing Butler into 16 turnovers. The 57 points allowed to Butler were the fewest points that the Red Storm have allowed this season.

During their six conference games prior to their matchup on Tuesday, the Red Storm struggled defensively, surrendering a league-worst 86 points per game to Big East opponents. St. John’s has allowed Boston College, Georgetown, and Creighton (twice) to score over 90 points against them this season.

In all four of their 90-plus point losses, St. John’s allowed their opponents to make over 53 percent of their shots. While, the Red Storm recorded conference victories against Georgetown and Butler, holding both teams to under 44 percent shooting.

The star this season that has carried St. John’s offensively is sophomore guard, Julian Champagnie (20.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg). Champagnie is currently leading the conference in scoring, as well as leading the Red Storm in rebounding. He recently scored a career-high 33 points on Saturday against Creighton.

Aside from the Champagnie, the Red Storm has had trouble finding other consistent scoring options behind him on the roster.

St. John’s is currently 6-1 at home but is winless on the road. The Red Storm will host Marquette on Saturday before heading on the road to play at UConn on Monday.
