Michigan Basketball: 2020-21 keys for Wolverines to win at Purdue Boilermakers
By Adam Childs
3. Get Dickinson going
Dickinson had an unbelievable start to the season and still leads the team in scoring at 15.7 a game and rebounding at 7.5 a game. This is still true despite the struggles in the last few games for the freshman.
He really struggled against Minnesota in their loss. He was flustered by the double-teams and turned the ball over multiple times. He found himself on the bench for long stretches of the game because of it.
Against Maryland, he had trouble finding openings for shots but did a much better job passing the ball. He made the right reads and found the open guys. He is going to see more double-teams as the year goes on and he needs to continue to be a good passer out of those.
Even with this, the Wolverines need to try and get him back on track. The offense played really well against Maryland, even though Dickinson didn’t score much but the offense is running its best when he is.
While I mentioned earlier they need to not force their offense, they still need to get the ball to Dickinson early and often. He needs to attack Williams and try and get him in foul trouble. The Boilermakers have a big option behind Williams in Zach Edey, but he is still pretty raw and not nearly the player Williams is yet.
If the Wolverines can get Dickinson going and at the same time make Williams really work on the defensive side it should be good for Michigan. Williams is obviously only effective on the court and if getting the ball into Dickinson will get him going and he can possibly get Williams in foul-trouble it is a double win for Michigan.
Dickinson is going to be held down for long, but he needs to get another good game under his belt so this doesn’t become a theme. Get him going and the Wolverines offense will be very good.
The Boilermakers are playing well right now, but the Wolverines are playing better. They have more weapons on offense and this may be the best defense Purdue has seen this year. The Wolverines shut down their outside game and continue their hot streak.
