Big 12 Basketball: Oklahoma climbs, Kansas falls in latest power rankings
By Andrew Tineo
Oklahoma led off the week with an emphatic 26 point win over Kansas State. Although the Sooners did not play the most dominant, it might have been the most complete. They had three players in double figures, led by De’Vion Harmon with 16. It was a rare instance where the Sooners got dominated on the boards and still won comfortably. The Wildcats outrebounded Oklahoma, 47-33, including 15-9 in offensive rebounds.
Elijah Harkless had his best game as a Sooner, tallying eight points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Harkless is averaging just 3.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game on the season. This game was his breakout and a potential to fulfill a bigger role, further down the road.
A 12-4 run toward the latter half of the second half would expand the Sooner lead to a game-high seven. Marcus Garrett fouling out only enhanced the Sooners chances at victory.
Harmon is slowly is becoming this team’s best offensive force on the season, tying his career-high with 22 points. Both teams would trade blows down the stretch, with Umoja Gibson with and an-one on one end. On the ensuing possession, Ochai Agbaji would drill a three-pointer.
Oklahoma would hit their free throws and make the biggest jump of the week, with a 75-68 upset of Kansas.
The slate doesn’t get any easier, as the Sooners have a pair of Top 20 matchups. They will travel to Austin to play Texas on Tuesday. They will then come back home to play Alabama in the SEC/Big 12 Battle.
