13. Fordham Rams

  • 2020-21 record: 1-7 overall, 1-7 A-10
  • Previous ranking: 14th

The Rams have struggled to find much of any success this season – but, despite maintaining an even worse offense than Saint Joseph’s, the Rams are ahead of the Hawks based on the fact that their lone win is leaps and bounds better than the Hawks’ win over Albany.

Fordham has dropped six of their games – including season-opening losses to George Washington and La Salle – by double-digits.  The seventh loss was an offensive struggle against Duquesne, where the Rams dropped a 48-45 heartbreaker on the road.  Where Fordham’s resume stands out against Saint Joseph’s is courtesy of their performance on January 5th, where the Rams shocked Dayton at home, 55-54.

The Rams had a prime opportunity to pick up a significant road win on Sunday, taking on a Rhode Island squad that was without Fatts Russell – and Fordham was actually up by as much as eight in the second half at one point.  Ultimately, many of the issues that have plagued Fordham all season hurt them against URI – they shot just 35.5% (11-31) inside and 24.0% (6-25) from long range, were an awful 2-6 from the line, and were outrebounded 47-29.

He was not nearly as effective against URI, but if there has been a bright spot for Fordham as of late, it has been the play of sophomore Chris Austin.  After recording single-digit performances against George Washington and La Salle, Austin ripped off five-straight double-figure games after having just two last season.  His best showing came against the win over Dayton, where Austin poured in 20 points behind five three-pointers.

Fordham will have a few chances coming up to claim their second win of the year, especially in their next outing when they host Duquesne in a rematch of their closest loss.  The Rams will subsequently have another go at George Washington, which might be their best chance for a win, to close out the month of January.
