12. George Washington Colonials

  • 2020-21 record: 3-9 overall, 2-3 A-10
  • Previous ranking: 12th

After suffering a tumultuous post-Christmas stretch that saw three players – including their fourth and fifth-leading scorers – leave the program, the Colonials have actually done fairly well, all things considered.  They are still not great – but George Washington has finally picked up a solid A-10 win to add to their lackluster resume.

When I ranked the A-10 teams earlier in the month, the Colonials were coming off the first of back-to-back home games against Duquesne, having dropped the first by 12.  Hours after those rankings were published, the Colonials knocked off the Dukes, 75-73, giving them their third win.  George Washington dropped their following two games to VCU and Dayton by seven and 13 points, respectively – which are not necessarily awful results, given how GW’s season has gone.

The Colonials can be forgiven a bit, too, considering the outside factors that have had an impact on their season.  The riots in Washington, D.C. earlier this month forced George Washington to relocate to George Mason – and after their game against Dayton, the Colonials were forced to go on pause due to COVID-19 protocol.  Additionally, GW has been forced to operate without Jamison Battle, the team’s second-leading scorer, due to injury.

Luckily for GW, James Bishop has continued his impressive sophomore campaign, pouring in 24 points – which included a 13-15 mark from the charity stripe – against VCU, and followed that up with a 17 point, five-rebound, five-assist performance against Dayton.  What has ailed the Colonials in their last two outings, however, has been their inefficiency to score – they averaged 0.92 points per possession against the Rams, and were slightly worse against the Flyers at 0.87.

Their COVID-19 pause has caused GW’s final two games of January – at George Mason and home against Fordham – to be postponed.  Both were winnable, but now, the Colonials will be slated to return to action on February 6th – and will host Saint Louis, before having to travel to Richmond.
