Big 12 Basketball power rankings: Oklahoma climbs after SEC invasion
By Andrew Tineo
Previous games: 88-87 win over No. 10 Texas Tech, 80-85 loss to Florida.
Next games: Tuesday at. Iowa State, Saturday vs. Kansas.
This week for the Mountaineers has been nothing short of a roller coaster. In potentially, the best game of the conference slate so far, West Virginia had heroics to beat Texas Tech near the buzzer.
It was a balanced attack for the Mountaineers, as they had six players in double figures, led by 24 from Miles McBride. McBride would also be the one to close the game and a signature Big 12 win for their resume, heading into March.
The Mountaineers shot an efficient 63 percent from beyond the arc and was the difference-maker, to alongside 16 free throws made, compared to Texas Tech’s 10.
West Virginia would not have as much success on Saturday, as they fell to Florida. The Mountaineers got a great effort from Derek Culver, as he cashed in on 28 points and 14-17 from the free throw line.
However, it was a 26 percent effort from beyond the arc that would hurt West Virginia the most. No matter how efficient Culver was, Colin Castleton might have been better. The junior had 21 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line.
It was a tough decision because West Virginia has played better than the seventh-ranked team in the conference at times. Due to dropping the head to head to the next team on the list, West Virginia will need to pull out a convincing win to climb back.
