NBA Draft 2021: 5 seniors that have helped their draft stock this season
By Matt Melton
John Petty – Alabama
Petty came to Alabama in the same recruiting class as Herbert Jones and current NBA star Collin Sexton, but never quite developed his game the same way Jones did. That was until his junior and senior season with new Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats.
Petty has always been an elite 3-point shooter, even to the point where he was described as a “flamethrower” during Alabama’s victory over Virginia Tech in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Petty is in fact the all-time leader in made 3-pointers in Alabama history, a record in which he broke this season. Petty has improved his overall game this season, and that will benefit him in the Draft.
Petty could’ve turned pro after last season where he averaged career highs in every statistical category, but he decided to return to Tuscaloosa where he is a big part of the Crimson Tide’s run atop the SEC. Petty has shown this season that he isn’t just a 3-point shooter, and has turned into a player who does everything well.
John Petty will be a coveted prospect in the NBA Draft due to his 3-point shooting ability, similar to Corey Kispert earlier. You can make the argument because of his shooting ability that Petty was already going to be selected, but due to his improvement in his overall game, Petty has turned himself into one of the more interesting 3-point shooting prospects who can go anywhere in this draft. When Petty is on, there are few better.
