Conference USA Basketball: 2021 conference tournament preview, predictions
By Matt Melton
Semifinals
1E Western Kentucky vs 2W UAB
The Hilltoppers and the Blazers did not play during the regular season, but this one aside from the final will be the game of the tournament. Western Kentucky has Bassey, as well as guard Taveion Hollingsworth whom the Blazers will struggle to contain.
Western Kentucky may be too much for the Blazers, but don’t entirely count out UAB in this one. The Hilltoppers will win a close one to advance to the C-USA Tournament finals, and one win away from the NCAA Tournament.
Prediction: Western Kentucky 76, UAB 71
1W Louisiana Tech vs 3W North Texas
You could make the argument that both of these teams are about the same. These two split the two regular-season matchups with the difference being a combined 7 points. This meeting will once again be close with Louisiana Tech pulling off yet another close win to advance to the finals.
Prediction: Louisiana Tech 73, North Texas 70
Finals
1E Western Kentucky vs 1W Louisiana Tech
The East division champs vs the West division champs with a bid in the NCAA Tournament on the line. The one big advantage however in this game will be Charles Bassey, and I believe the Hilltoppers will feed him the ball in-route to a 25+ points, 15+ rebound performance. Western Kentucky has arguably been the best team in Conference-USA all season, and they win going away to send the Hilltoppers dancing.
Prediction: Western Kentucky 82 Louisiana Tech 70
The Conference-USA Tournament will be must-see due to every team fighting to be the one C-USA team in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. High stakes, star players, good teams, and much more; when the C-USA Tournament tips off on Wednesday, March 10, the “Madness” will truly begin.
