NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target UMass transfer Tre Mitchell
Texas Tech Red Raiders
There will be plenty of questions this offseason for Texas Tech’s roster, including what Mac McClung and Terrence Shannon Jr. decide to do. But what this staff knows they need to deal with is the frontcourt, whether Marcus Santos-Silva opts to come back for another year or not. There just isn’t much size beyond him and Tyreek Smith and there’s too much reliance on the perimeter players and small-ball to provide all of the offense.
Adding Mitchell would be different than what the Red Raiders normally likes with their bigs, being defense-first. But assuming that their leading scorers do leave, they’ll need to focus on adding offensive and scoring this offseason. This is a program that loves to make splashes on the transfer market and this would be a major splash.
Virginia Cavaliers
The Cavaliers wouldn’t be where they are this season if it wasn’t for former Marquette forward Sam Hauser. Although he was more known as an offensive weapon, Hauser worked on his game to fit in the team’s system and still led Virginia in scoring with 16.0 ppg. He’s a senior and so is starting center Jay Huff, an elite defender, and leader in rebounding who very well will be gone as well.
Virginia relies heavily on those two, with backups Justin McKoy and Kadin Shedrick getting minutes in the frontcourt but may not be ready for primetime next season. The Cavaliers could go to the transfer portal again and make sure they have at least one offensively gifted player on the roster in Mitchell, who in return would join a juggernaut program in the ACC with a great chance of playing in the NCAA Tournament.
