Mark Turgeon

After moving through a number of talented mid-major head coaches, it’s pertinent to mention one of the bigger name coaches who will likely be interested in the Oklahoma job. When there’s someone out there with Big 12 head coaching experience, a familiarity with the area, and potentially an interest to leave his current job, then you have to consider him.

Turgeon played basketball at Kansas under Larry Brown and coached there under Roy Williams. He’s been a head coach at Jacksonville State and Wichita State and has had successful runs with Texas A&M and Maryland. He led the Aggies to four NCAA Tournaments before they left the Big 12 and his last decade with the Terrapins has been fantastic.

After what he’s proved with the Terrapins, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Turgeon head back closer to his roots in the Midwest. He’s already proven himself as a Big 12 head coach with an Aggies program that hasn’t been the same since he left. He’d be a fantastic hire for Oklahoma and probably the current power conference coach who would make the most sense in making his lateral move.
