Why Texas Tech basketball could hire Joe Golding

There have been a number of openings in and around Texas and the Midwest and the same group of head coaches keeps popping up for these jobs. Especially after the upsets pulled by some of these Texan schools in recent years, the crop of young coaching talent in Texas is as deep as ever. What’s even wilder is that the first of these names has a direct connection to Beard himself.

Golding played his basketball at Abilene Christian, with one of those seasons coming when Beard was on the coaching staff. He’s spent time at various schools, including a stint at Little Rock before Beard’s arrival. He’s spent the last ten years at his alma mater, highlighted by an upset win of Texas in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

With Beard off to Texas, wouldn’t it be something to hire the coach who led the stunning upset of the Longhorns this past postseason? Golding is still relatively inexperienced, even with a decade of head coaching experience under his belt. Still, his work at Abilene Christian, which only recently joined D1, has been impressive and he’s earned a step up.
