NCAA Basketball: Breaking down the 5 finalists for transfer Jayden Gardner
By Matt Melton
Virginia Cavaliers
Rounding out the list is also a very interesting potential destination for Gardner, the Virginia Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers had a disappointing finish to their 2020-2021 season as they were upset by 13-seed Ohio in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Virginia finished the season at 18-7 overall, while also winning the ACC Regular Season Championship. The Cavaliers have won the ACC regular-season three of the past four seasons, but that may be in jeopardy next season due to roster turnover.
With Virginia losing their top two leading scorers in Sam Hauser and Jay Huff, the Cavaliers front-court needs a guy who can step in from day one and put up consistent numbers. With only one current commit in their 2021 class, Virginia’s roster currently has some gaps, especially in the frontcourt.
If Gardner wants a situation where he can step in and be a focal point of an offense from day one, as well as a consistent team at the top of their conference ranked in the Top 25, it’s Virginia.
Gardner has a potential fit with each of these five teams, some possibly even better than others. Whoever does land Gardner however will be getting not only an extremely talented and consistent scorer and rebounder but also a player just waiting to “break out” on a national stage.
