Baylor Bears
Drawing pursuit from the latest National Champion has to be a great feeling for Washington. His play this year for Compass Prep has more than solidified himself as one of the top guards in the class, despite not receiving a selection to the McDonald’s All-American team. However, the Bears and Scott Drew are in need of top-level guards to maintain their play from last season.
Key guard Davion Mitchell has already declared for the NBA draft and it should be expected that Jared Butler does the same any day now. Senior MaCio Teague could return under the NCAA’s eligibility policy extension, but who could blame him for entering the draft pool following the season Baylor just completed. Regardless there is a considerable drop-off for next year’s team regarding guard experience.
Transfer Adam Flagler stepped up for Baylor last season and stands to inherit a significant increase in offensive responsibility next year. His current backcourt running mate, LJ Cryer, received spot minutes throughout the season but will be asked to take a big step forward in his development in his sophomore campaign.
Reinforcements are also arriving via the Bear’s 2021 recruiting class with 5-star wing Kendall Brown from national powerhouse Sunrise Christian and 4-star guard Langston Love from Montverde Academy.
There will undeniably be a ton of talent on Baylor’s roster again next season, but head coach Scott Drew could still utilize Washington’s skillset to make the transition from proven guards towards a youthful one easier. Baylor utilized a 4-guard rotation last season on their way to the title, but with less experience on next year’s team it reasonable to think Coach Drew may look for more of a timeshare in the backcourt and further opportunity for Washington to make an immediate impact for the champs.
