SEC Basketball: 5 biggest storylines of 2021 offseason
By Matt Melton
How will Georgia fill out the roster?
The Bulldogs and head coach Tom Crean have seen some massive roster turnover from a team that went 14-12 last season and finished among the bottom half of the SEC for the fifth consecutive season. The familiar names of Wheeler, Camara, and Fagan are now gone with new names virtually unknown to Georgia fans now set to feature prominent roles next season.
As you can guess by now, the Georgia roster will look extremely different next season. The Bulldogs are currently set to lose four of their top five leading scorers from last season with the only notable returning player is guard KD Johnson. Johnson averaged 13.5 PPG last season, which ranked 2nd for the Bulldogs.
Georgia is currently set to bring in an almost brand-new roster including some notable names including Virginia transfer Jabri Abdur-Rahim, USC transfer Noah Baumann, and Florida Atlantic transfer Jailyn Ingram. Also adding at least three new names through recruiting, and a few others returning, Georgia’s 2021-22 roster is starting to take shape. The Bulldogs however will still have a lot of work to do.
Georgia will still need to add anywhere from 2-4 more players through either the transfer portal or recruiting. They could also however fill these spots with potential returns of senior Justin Kier, Andrew Garcia, and PJ Horne utilizing their extra year of eligibility, as well as star guard and leading scorer Sahvir Wheeler potentially withdrawing from the transfer portal.
There is obviously still work to do when it comes to rounding out the 2021-22 roster for the Bulldogs, and this will certainly be a storyline to follow throughout the offseason. The next couple of weeks will be important for Georgia and could tell whether recent trends will remain the same or change next season.
There is obviously still a lot of time left in the SEC Basketball offseason. If the past couple of weeks are anything to go off, however, we are in for an exciting next couple of months for SEC Basketball fans.
