Pac-12 Basketball: 5 biggest storylines to watch for 2021-22 offseason
Between graduation, the draft, and transfers, there will be a lot of new faces at Arizona State
With the amount of talent on the roster last season, a 9th place finish in the Pac-12 was disappointing, to say the least for the Arizona State Sun Devils. The roster for the 2021-22 season will look quite different with 13 players (so far) leaving the program through graduation, transferring, and turning pro, and as of now nine new faces coming aboard.
Gone is the senior leadership from the likes of Remy Martin (who entered the transfer portal earlier this week), Kimani Lawrence, and Alonzo Verge Jr., as is every player who registered a statistic last season, except for a pair of sophomores, Jalen Graham and John Olmstead. Gone to the NBA are freshmen Josh Christopher and Marcus Bagley and the 25 points and 11 rebounds they provided last season.
Although, if Bagley decides to return to college, he has entered the transfer portal so either way it looks like his time in Tempe is over. Lastly, Taeshon Cherry has transferred to Grand Canyon after three years of underwhelming results as a Sun Devil.
As a result of all the departures, Bobby Hurley hit the transfer market and the recruiting trail hard. Four transfers will be joining the team including reigning Mid-American Player of the Year, Marreon Jackson from Toledo. The 6’1 guard averaged 18.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and nearly two steals per game for the Rockets last season.
He gives Hurley an immediate floor general who can get buckets. Joining Jackson is AJ Bramah who averaged over 21 and 10 in 12 games for Robert Morris last season and guards DJ Horne and Jay Heath who led Illinois State and Boston College in scoring last season.
The Arizona State five-man frontcourt recruiting class is a top-30 ranked class and 3rd best in the conference according to 247Sports. The headliner is 6’10 center Enoch Boakye who is ranked 39th nationally and should give ASU a big presence in the middle. Demari Williams, Justin Rochelin, and Jamiya Neal are all top-45 small forwards and William Felton is a 6’8 power forward who comes from the basketball factory that is Hargrave Military Academy.
There is hope that this collection of talent will work out better than last year’s, but there are a ton of new faces to build chemistry with both on and off the court.
