Analyzing the 4 finalists for Syracuse transfer forward Quincy Guerrier
Memphis Tigers
As of tradition, the Tigers are interested in a top transfer forward on the market. After losing DJ Jeffries and Moussa Cisse, the team is looking to add proven offense in what will be an important year for head coach Penny Hardaway.
While Guerrier certainly would have a likely starting role at Memphis, there’s plenty of talent at the forward position already on the roster. Miami transfer Earl Timberlake came a month ago, along with Oregon brothers, Johnathan and Chandler Lawson. And Deandre Williams is set to come back as the team’s starting forward. He’d have to slide to the five-spot to make way for Guerrier though, making it a fairly small lineup.
Oregon Ducks
After landing JUCO All-American wing Rivaldo Soares, the Ducks are still looking to land a versatile playmaker that can play either forward position. He’d be joining a roster that has plenty of frontcourt depth, including returning centers, N’Faly Dante and Franck Kepnang, along with five-star freshman forward Nathan Bittle and top-50 forward Isaac Johnson.
While Guerrier would most likely have to play the majority of his time at the small forward position, it would allow Soares to be the 6th Man and provide much-needed depth in the backcourt. The concern here would be that if the frontcourt plays as well as expected, the former Orange forward would be more of a role player than taking a leading position in the offense.
It’s interesting as Guerrier would have to play a lot at either small or power forward at three of these options mainly, while Illinois is the only one that can provide the freedom to play anywhere in the lineup. Adding a past history between him and head coach Brad Underwood and I think the Big Ten program has a real shot to win this recruitment.
