3. Gregg Marshall (Wichita State)

For the previous seven seasons, Mark Turgeon had been at Wichita State, turning the program around after a run of mediocrity. The Shockers had just made a Sweet Sixteen run in 2006, but now Turgeon had moved on and the program needed a new leader. What happened next wouldn’t just be about maintaining that momentum, but taking the program to the next level, especially in a talented MVC.

For Gregg Marshall, that was an easy challenge to accept, especially after what he had already done in his brief head coaching career. Himself a former assistant at the College of Charleston and Marshall, he had spent nine years building Winthrop into the best Big South program, making a mind-blowing seven NCAA Tournaments during that time span.

At Wichita State, the results were even more impressive. The Shockers became a national power over the course of Marshall’s tenure, winning an NIT title, making the Final Four in 2013, and winning their first 35 games in the following season. This program dominated the MVC before departing for the AAC In 2017. Unfortunately, Marshall stepped aside seven months ago after allegations of player abuse; though his impact on this program remains crystal clear even today.
