Big East Basketball: Way-too-early power rankings for 2021-22 season
2020-21 season record: 13-13 (7-9)
Entering last season’s Big East Conference Tournament, the Hoyas were 9-12 and in the bottom-tier of the standings. But four straight wins, including over both Villanova and Creighton, gave the team the tournament title and an automatic berth to the Big Dance. That postseason run may have saved head coach Patrick Ewing’s job but he’ll have another tough task for Georgetown next season.
That’s because the team lost all four of their double-scorers, including seniors Jahvon Blair and Jamorko Pickett, along with starting center Qudus Wahab, who transferred to Maryland this offseason. Guards Donald Carey and Dante Harris are coming back and the sophomore Harris had a breakout end to the season and has the potential to lead the way in 2022.
Joining them is a top-20 incoming recruiting class, led by five-star shooting guard Aminu Mohammed and four-star center Ryan Mutombo. 7’0 center Timothy Igohoefe will likely get more minutes next season, along with Eastern Kentucky transfer Tre King.
Georgetown will need a lot from The Citadel transfer Kaiden Rice, who averaged 17.6 ppg last season. This was an average to below-average team last season before the postseason run and they’ll be one of the more younger teams in the country next year. If Mohammed can be a star scorer, the Hoyas will have a chance to compete. But the loss of Wahab will be tough to overcome unless Mutombo can be an instant impact contributor.
