NCAA Basketball: Alonzo Verge, Tre Mitchell among top available transfers
6. G Alonzo Verge – Arizona State Sun Devils
2020-21 stats: 14.0 ppg and 3.8 apg
Whether as a starter or coming off the bench, Verge has proven to be a high volume shooter capable of going for 20+ points on any given night. He spent two years with the Sun Devils alongside Remy Martin in the backcourt and has great potential if the efficiency improves.
Verge entered the transfer portal late and is still in the NBA Draft process. If he does opt to come back for another year, look for the 5th year playmaker to be a big commodity, as there are few perimeter free agents with his talents.
5. C Kevin Samuel – TCU Horned Frogs
2020-21 stats: 8.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg
One of many outgoing transfers this offseason, Samuel may have been the most surprising. He started all 98 games in three years with the Horned Frogs and was a solid post player throughout. The 6’11 big man is a good defender, including averaging over a couple of blocks a game and can rebound at a high level.
As a late transfer that didn’t enter the NBA Draft, it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up. He’s fairly flawed, including a career free throw shot of 40% but teams needing a big man can pencil Samuel for near double-double numbers on a nightly basis.
