NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 10 options for Oral Roberts transfer Kevin Obanor
6. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Tide lost over 22 ppg and 7.0 rpg in a span of one week, as Joshua Primo elected to stay in the NBA Draft while leading scorer Jaden Shackelford transferred shortly after. That doesn’t affect the frontcourt but after losing so much offensive firepower, adding a 20 ppg caliber scorer makes sense.
The issue here is that I’m not sure that he’s better than the other senior forward transfer Noah Gurley. While the former Furman Paladin isn’t as great an offensive threat, he’s a much better defender and can space the floor out too. Obanor would get minutes in the frontcourt but he could very well end up splitting minutes with Gurley, limiting both of them.
5. Maryland Terrapins
The Terrapins recently landed Arizona State transfer Pavlo Dziuba for depth purposes but Obanor is definitely better on paper. This is a scenario similar to Alabama where after losing 15 ppg scoring wing Aaron Wiggins to the draft, Maryland wanted to find some offense in mid-July to replace that.
But can Obanor fit well with sophomore breakout forward Donta Scott? The 6’7 forward averaged 11.0 ppg and 5.9 rpg and played both the power forward and center positions. With Georgetown transfer center Qudus playing the five, there could be a situation where he, Scott, and Obanor split the 80 frontcourt minutes next season and create some potent offensive lineups. But that could also be disastrous if Obanor struggles at the Big Ten level.
