NCAA Basketball: Updated early top-25 rankings for 2021-22 after NBA Draft deadline
Of all the offseasons for first-year head coaches, I would say that there’s consensus that Chris Beard of Texas and Hubert Davis of North Carolina are at the top in terms of best and good news throughout. But in my opinion, former NBA head coach Mike Woodson is a close third after what happened at Indiana.
Among all the potential players to enter the NBA Draft. It was thought that Trayce Jackson-Davis, who led the Hoosiers with 19.1 ppg and 9.0 rpg last season after a head coaching change. Instead, he immediately decided to stay for his junior season, giving Coach Woodson a superstar to work with.
And once forward Race Thompson came back as well, that was it regarding the draft process. The team also scored well in the transfer portal, landing Pitt guard Xavier Johnson, Northwestern forward Miller Kopp, and big man Michael Durr of South Florida.
And even though key guards Aljami Durham and Armaan Franklin transferred out, there’s plenty of depth remaining. Parker Steward, a former 19 ppg scorer at Tennessee-Martin will be eligible to play, along with former five-star prospect Kristian Lander set to have a potential breakout season. And even if he doesn’t look for current five-star freshman recruit Tamar Bates to have an early impact as well.
With Jackson-Davis leading the way, there’s a lot of potential for this team if the guards can consistently produce. How Johnson runs the offense will ultimately determine things but Hoosier fans can’t ask for anything else from the past few months.
