OVC Basketball outlook in 2021-22 after shakeup of members
By Chris Smith
Morehead State
The Eagles finished last season with a record of (23-8). Morehead State will be looking to mirror their success from a season ago, which saw them win the OVC Championship, which rewarded them with a first-found matchup with West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Preston Spradlin is back for his 5th year atop the Eagles program. If Morehead State wants to mirror their success, it starts with sophomore and the returning Freshman of the Year, Johni Broome. Broome registered 13.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
If there is an area Broome needs to improve at, foul shooting. Broome attempted 1110 free throws but was only able to knock down less than 62 percent. Skyelar Potter also returns for the reigning OVC Champs. Potter collected a tick under 12 points per game. Morehead State was the best scoring defense a year ago, allowing just 64.1 per game.
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville
The Cougars will be hoping for improvement for the 21-22 season, as SIUE is coming off of a (9-17) campaign. Brian Barone enters his 2nd year as the Cougars head coach. SIUE lost their two leading scorers from last season, Sidney Wilson and Mike Adewunmi. Shamar Wright will be looking to up his production, as he averaged 9.0 points per game.
With the top two scorers from a year ago, coach Barone should be hoping for a bigger role out of Wright, but he will have to get better from the foul line as a guard. He was only able to knock down 58.5 percent from the foul line.
