NCAA Basketball: 25 biggest offseason winners heading into 2021-22 season
Oregon knew it had a lot of work to do this offseason based on the roster. The top three contributors (LJ Figueroa, Chris Duarte, and Eugene Omoruyi) all left after their senior campaigns, and several players left via the transfer portal as well. The frontcourt was fine since N’Faly Dante, Franck Kepnang, five-star commit Nathan Bittle, and Eric Williams are around but the backcourt was left at one point with literally just Will Richardson.
But never underestimate head coach Dana Altman, who was able to form a top-tier backcourt rotation this offseason. The first pickup was Oklahoma combo guard De’Vion Harmon, who can facilitate the offense alongside Richardson. Then Rivaldo Soares, one of the top Junior College transfers (South Plains) in the class, committed as well. The 6’5 guard can play and defend multiple positions and gives them depth. Rutgers grad transfer Jacob Young joined later, coming off a season of 14.1 ppg on 37% shooting from deep.
Yet the biggest pickup for the Ducks this offseason arguably was Quincy Gueirrer. The 6’7 forward put up 13.7 ppg and 8.4 rpg for Syracuse and had several games of 20+ scoring games. He has tremendous potential and could end up being the leading scorer for Oregon in 2021-22 depending on how the team looks on the court.
And when you add the massive pickup of five-star and top-10 overall recruit Dior Johnson, the Ducks will have not only a star for the year after but also a recruiter to land another five-star prospect in the 2022 class. And if they somehow land five-star recruit Emoni Bates for this upcoming season, then Oregon has to be the No. 1 overall winner of the offseason.
