NCAA Basketball: 25 biggest offseason winners heading into 2021-22 season
Coach Chris Beard’s old team has done well this offseason at Texas Tech. But it doesn’t compare to what has been going on at rival Texas, where in a few months has gone from a solid roster to possibly the team to beat for next season.
After losing all but four players to either the NBA Draft or transfer portal, the Longhorns landed by far the best crop of transfers of any team this offseason. In the completely rebuilt frontcourt, UMass center Tre Mitchell (18.8 ppg and 7.2 rpg), Vanderbilt forward Dylan Disu (15.0 ppg and 9.2 rpg), Creighton forward Christian Bishop (11.0 ppg and 6.4 rpg), and Timmy Allen of Utah (17.2 ppg and 6.4 rpg) is just unreal starpower. How it fits will be an interesting question but Coach Beard should be trusted to make it work.
Yet as good as this core group is, the best incoming transfer for Texas is guard Marcus Carr. He averaged 19.4 ppg and 4.9 apg this past season at Minnesota and has had several 30+ point efforts. He left the NBA Draft process and comes in as one of the top pure scorers in the country and joins returning double-digit scoring guards Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey, as well as Kentucky transfer Devin Askew.
The Longhorns also got a big win on the recruiting trail this Summer with the commitment of class of 2022 five-star point guard Arterio Morris, who’ll be Carr’s replacement for the 2022-23 season.
Before we start thinking about that, Texas is built to not only win the Big 12 title next season but if this group of transfers click, could be the odds-on favorite to win the NCAA Basketball national title for the 2021-22 season.
With Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski heading out, there’s an opening for a new crop of elite head coaches to take over the sport. If this offseason is any indication, Coach Beard and the Longhorns may be the face when it’s all said and done.
