ACC Basketball: 10 questions looming for the 2021-22 season
8. How will the new Head Coaches fare in the ACC?
Head coaching turnover in ACC Basketball has seen some new faces emerge in the ranks. This season the North Carolina Tar Heels and Boston College Golden Eagles will have a new look as they have first-year coaches leading the way for them entering 2021-22.
Hubert Davis will take over at North Carolina and he has big shoes to fill in his first head coaching stint as the first black head coach in school history. It’s an advantage to him that he’s spent the
last nine seasons as an assistant coach on the Tar Heels basketball staff.
However, the Tar Heels finished 18-11 this past season and 14-19 in 2019-20, well below expectations when considering the legacy that’s been built. Culture change begins with Davis leading the charge, so it will be interesting to see what things look like in Year 1.
Earl Grant looks to change the culture at Boston College. Grant joins the ACC ranks after compiling a 127-89 (.588) record at the College of Charleston. In his seven-year tenure in the Colonial Athletic Association, he won just one CAA Tournament and Regular Season title and made an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 and was named the CAA Coach of the Year in 2017, but his ability build a program hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Grant won just nine games in his first year at College of Charleston, then didn’t finished below .500 just once if you count the Covid-19 shortened season as an official regular season. The ACC isn’t the CAA, but Grant has shown he knows how to build a winning culture so it will be interesting to see what he can do with Boston College.
