ACC Basketball: 10 questions looming for the 2021-22 season
5. What’s up the Seminoles’ sleeve for 2021-22?
No matter what comes their way, it seems the Florida State Seminoles and head coach Leonard Hamilton always have something up their sleeve. Despite everything going on with Covid-19, the Seminoles still went 18-7 on the year, 11-4 in ACC play, No. 14 in the final AP Top 25 rankings and made a run to their third consecutive Sweet 16. With a new crop of talent and additions, do they have an encore performance on the horizon?
The Seminoles’ will feel the losses of Raiquan Gray, MJ Walker and Scottie Barnes, but the additions of transfers Caleb Mills and Cam’Ron Fletcher and top-rated freshmen Jalen Warley and Matthew Cleveland, don’t expect too much fall off.
Mills stepped away from the Houston Cougars program this past season after four games for personal reasons. He had put up 9.8 points and 1.3 steals per contest in 2020-21. Fletcher stepped away from the Kentucky Wildcats program after nine games this past season. With fresh starts in the Florida State rotation, look for them to make an impact.
Depth was the biggest tool in the Seminoles’ arsenal in 2020-21. The Florida State bench ranked first in points per game (30.3), first in assists per game (5.7), first in steals per game (3.1) and second in rebounds per game (13.9) and blocks per game (2.2) in ACC Basketball this past season.
With more talent on the horizon, look for the Seminoles to be at the top of the ACC once again in 2021-22. Hamilton led Florida State to the 2019-20 regular season crown and given their roster on paper heading into this season, it could be another year where they’re an early favorite to win it all.
