Big 12 Basketball: 10 questions looming for the 2021-22 season
6. Can Porter Moser handle the job at Oklahoma?
New Oklahoma Sooners head coach Porter Moser has a lot to do to prove himself following the retirement of legendary head coach Lon Kruger, who spent 10 seasons leading the way for Oklahoma Basketball.
In his 10 seasons leading the way for the Sooners, Kruger made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including an appearance in the Final Four in 2016 before announcing it was time to step away this past March.
Now, Moser takes over and he possesses quite the resume already since residing as head coach of Loyola-Chicago back in 2011. He has a record of 181-141 (.571) and a slew of accolades he brings with him to the Sooners’ sideline.
He’s led them to three regular-season Missouri Valley Conference titles, won six NCAA Tournament games across two NCAA Tournament appearances, made two Sweet 16s and the 2018 Final Four.
Moser is quite the decorated head coach that’s shown he can build a college program. The Big 12 basketball coaching ranks continue to change and he’ll need to prove himself given the ever-changing landscape with NIL, among other things.
Jordan Goldwire (Duke) and Tanner Groves (Eastern Washington) are two names to keep an eye on in their rotation in 2021-22.
Goldwire put up 5.8 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.2 steals per game this past season at Duke. Groves was the 2020-21 Big Sky Player of the Year and Big Sky Tournament MVP this past season while producing 17.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game.
