4. How will the Red Raiders look under Mark Adams?

Mark Adams is back in head coaching once again after spending the last five seasons on the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ coaching staff. It looked like things under Chris Beard were a bit rocky given their second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament.

Since going 31-7 in 2018-19, the Red Raiders had back-to-back seasons of 18 wins, far removed from the Final Four caliber squad they were in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.  Adams should have his hands full in 2021-22, but it helps he’s spent the last five seasons on the coaching staff.

He knows the ropes a bit in Lubbock, and it’s already helped them on the recruiting trail. He’s acquired Sardaar Calhoun (Florida State), Kevin Obanor ( Oral Roberts), Adonis Arms (Winthrop), and Last Chance U star Kealan Allen among others as he looks to build a new roster to his liking.

Obanor is a versatile 6-foot-8 prospect with a ton of promise playing inside and out as he did for the past three years at Oral Roberts. He put up 18.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 46.3 percent from behind the arc in 2020-21.

Arms is another intriguing prospect on the wing. He produced 10.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game and shot 35.1 percent from behind the arc off the bench at Winthrop in 2020-21. He has the ability to defend multiple positions on the floor and can create off the bounce.

The Red Raiders made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament in six seasons under Beard. It will be interesting to see how they fare in Year 1 under Adams.
