Big Ten Basketball: Top 20 impact transfers heading into 2021-22 season
No. 2 Alonzo Verge Jr. – Nebraska
Nebraska already has fifth-year senior Kobe Webster playing point guard with 2020-21 star transfer Trey McGowens playing alongside him, what they do not have – with the departure of Teddy Allen- is a third member of the backcourt that is not only a consistent scoring threat, but is capable of breaking out any given game. This description of former Arizona State guard Alonzo Verge Jr fits perfectly.
The 6-2 guard would be comfortable coming off the bench, as he won the PAC-12 Sixth Man of the Year award in his freshman season, but his fourteen points per game are too much of a benefit to not start. Especially with McGowens able to defend the small forward position, Verge Jr will start and get opportunities. Verge Jr has great ball-handling capabilities that allow him to excel in isolation, especially if he has a mismatch on the perimeter after using a screen.
Verge also carries more than just the security of being a consistent scorer, he has the ability to light it up, case in point was the seven three-pointers he connected on in a loss to San Diego State. Verge’s repertoire begins to expand when the almost four rebounds and four assists per game that he averages are taken into account.
The Cornhuskers struggled to score last season as they came in as the twelfth highest-scoring team in the Big Ten, which was prior to the departure of Teddy Allen. The 2021-22 season looks to be set up to be Verge Jr’s best season yet.
