SEC Basketball: 10 key questions looming for the 2021-22 season
10. What’s the biggest matchup in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge?
For the ninth year in a row, SEC and Big 12 basketball will clash in the annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge. 10 of the 14 members of the SEC will take part this year and next year. SEC basketball won last year’s overall challenge 5-4 and holds a record of 25-24 over the last five challenges.
Kentucky Wildcats @ Kansas Jayhawks
The Wildcats will travel to Phog Allen to face off against the Jayhawks in a marquee SEC/Big 12 matchup. While Kentucky leads the overall series 33-10, Kansas has won four of the last five meetings including their last meeting in December 2020, 65-62. Fans can expect another close game in this year’s contest.
West Virginia Mountaineers @ Arkansas Razorbacks
The Razorbacks and the Mountaineers have faced off just once in their program’s history. They last met on November 26 in 2006 when the Razorbacks won that one, 81-74. They’ll look to keep the streak alive while looking to avenge their loss in last year’s challenge. Arkansas lost by four points last season to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Tennessee Volunteers @ Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns will hold homecourt advantage when the Volunteers visit them in this year’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge, which should help in Chris Beard’s first season on the sidelines. The Volunteers will have a young squad but they’ve got length and versatility and a legendary coach in Rick Barnes. Look for them to give Texas all they can handle.
