NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team frontcourts heading into 2021-22 season
The Hokies went from literally having no frontcourt one year to having one of the best in the ACC this past season. That’s due to the stellar play of Wofford transfer Keve Aluma, who broke out in a big way to lead the team with 15.2 ppg and 7.9 rpg, including back-to-back games where he went for 29 and 30 points against Virginia and Pittsburgh respectively.
But it wasn’t Aluma that was a nice surprise for Virginia Tech. Delaware transfer Justyn Mutts started out slow but proved to be an all-around asset for the Hokies, capable of playing both frontcourt positions and had a pair of 20+ point scoring games down the stretch. He and Aluma are both back and set to start but with rebounding machine Tyrece Radford gone, the team will need more frontcourt help on the boards next season.
Although they thought they added a true center in Michael Durr (more on him later), the Hokies still have some depth and potential among the bench frontcourt pieces. Lynn Kidd is looking to have a role after transferring in from Clemson, while Cordell Pemsl and David N’Guessan each played around 10 mpg last season for this team.
With Aluma and Mutts back, Virginia Tech doesn’t need a lot from the bench. But if freshman Jalen Haynes can possibly provide a boost out the gate, this team will be ranked at some point again in 2021-22.
