Big 12 Basketball: Top 10 point guards entering 2021-22 season
By Andrew Tineo
1. Remy Martin, Kansas
2020-2021 stats: 19.1 PPG, 3.7 APG, 43% FG
The best player from the transfer portal stunned the majority of college basketball, by exiting the NBA Draft process and sticking to his commitment to Kansas for his final season.
Martin is the exact type of player that the Jayhawks were missing last season. A lot of attention offensively went toward Marcus Garrett, to be the go-to scoring option. Self has had some of his best success with an elite point guard, from the examples of Frank Mason III, Devonte Graham, and now will be Martin.
Martin has been an impact all four years in Tempe, with consecutive seasons averaging 19.1 points per game. Although the Bobby Hurley experiment in Tempe has not gone to plan, the biggest bright spot has been Martin.
The weakest part of Martin’s game is his three-point stroke, as it’s a pedestrian 33.6% throughout his career. Not a terrible mark, but will need to improve in order to get Kansas to where they expect to be.
Martin is overall, the best point guard in the Big 12 conference, and has proved his worth, by being a 3x All-Pac 12 Team member. How far Kansas goes relies on how well Martin plays in 2021-2022.
