NCAA Basketball: Top 2023 prospect Tyler Smith signs with Overtime Elite
Minnesota receives commitment from 2022 recruit
Class of 2022, Pharrel Payne celebrated his 17th birthday by verbally committing to the University of Minnesota on Sunday. The 6-9 forward is unranked by both 247Sports and Rivals, but that will likely change after a huge summer.
Payne averaged 16 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks a game while shooting 62% from the field, in 18 games that 247Sports tracked, for Minnesota Select AAU this summer. The Cottage Grove (MN) native visited the Minneapolis campus on Saturday. He also held offers from Texas A&M, St. Louis, Appalachian State, Drake, Loyola Chicago, and others.
Arizona guard Pelle Larsson is likely to miss time
Arizona guard Pelle Larsson was on crutches and wearing a boot at Saturday’s Arizona Red-Blue volleyball scrimmage, according to Ryan Kelapire of Arizona Desert Storm. The 6-5 guard, who transferred from Utah, has a broken bone in his foot, and his timetable for return is still being determined. Arizona unofficially opens the 2021-22 season on Oct. 2 with the annual Red-Blue scrimmage. The Wildcats host NAU on Nov. 9 for the regular-season opener.
"“Pelle had a really good freshman year at Utah and has a high basketball IQ and a tremendous body and it’s a real, real high potential,” head coach Tommy Lloyd said in July. “And the last month’s been great working with him and watching him grow. I think he’s a guy that can play in any program in the country.”"
Larsson is expected to be in the ‘Cats rotation this year. He is an excellent shooter who also can distribute the basketball and defend.
He had a pretty good freshman season for the Utes, who averages 8.2 points to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 46.7% from the field and 46.3% from the 3-point line.
