5. Maryland Terrapins

Home & Away – Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers
Home Only – Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin
Away Only – Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue

The Terrapins have an interesting schedule for the 2021-22 season, which simply goes hand-in-hand with the interesting team they will have. The focal point on the court for Mark Turgeon is Fatts Russell at point guard and Qudus Wahab at center.

The two transfers are going to give Maryland a legitimate opportunity to split the home and away game with Illinois and Ohio State, two teams projected to finish ahead of them. The Terrapins are going to pick up their pace of play which was at almost 66 possessions per game, even as a lot of the offense will go through Wahab in the paint.

In order to neutralize Wahab and even get him off the floor by exposing his weak perimeter defending, a team needs a center that is a threat from behind the arc, or to take it to the basket off the dribble. Of the seven teams they face twice, Indiana has Jackson-Davis and Michigan State can opt to put Hauser, other than that, the Terrapins match-up well.

Maryland also lucked out by having to travel to Michigan and Purdue for the only game they play against each other. As much as the Maryland players look individually, they would not beat Michigan or Purdue anywhere, even though both do not have the shooting/mobile center. As for their third home game, as fun as Nebraska will be to watch, they will not beat Maryland.

The ‘home only’ games versus Minnesota, Penn State, and Wisconsin will be great to pad their record with some wins, without having to worry about an upset, but it would have been nice to have a lone game at home versus Rutgers and Michigan State instead.

Although, that would put them higher on this list and higher in the standings, instead of battling with Michigan State and Rutgers for sixth, seventh and eighth place and avoid Michigan in the Big Ten quarter-finals.
