NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 9 teams for 2022 wing Ty Rodgers
Michigan Wolverines
The local option is coming off a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and the No. 1 overall incoming recruiting class. That includes five-star freshman forward Caleb Houstan, as well as top-100 wing Isaiah Barnes. The program under head coach Juwan Howard is at an all-time high and there’s a path to playing time, assuming Houstan is a “one and done” player.
The only thing that can complicate things is Jett Howard, a 6’6 wing and son of Coach Howard who is also a consensus four-star prospect. They can play together on the court but Rodgers may have to play some at the four-spot and that doesn’t even count potential transfers. He hasn’t committed to the team yet but they’re a clear favorite for his services. That’s the potential downside but Michigan may be too good to pass up if he wants to stay close to home.
Michigan State Spartans
If the positional battle at Michigan is a real issue, the Spartans have a much clearer path to playing time on paper. Role player Gabe Brown is entering his senior season, while incoming freshman Pierre Brooks is more of an off-guard than a natural wing.
Michigan State has revamped its roster but still lacks a ton of proven scoring production. There’s a realistic way for Rodgers to not only come in as a freshman and get a fair amount of minutes but also be a focal point of the offense. Between the two, the Wolverines may be the better team at the moment but the Spartans have more to offer immediately.
