Notre Dame Basketball: 2021-22 season preview for the Fighting Irish
Schedule
Notre Dame has not officially announced its non-conference schedule yet, but we do know a few of their opponents so far for the upcoming season. Notre Dame will travel to compete in the Maui Invitational in November. Fully expect to see another relaxed Coach Mike Brey in shorts and a t-shirt for the games like he was the last time Notre Dame was invited to play in the Maui Invitational.
Notre Dame’s first opponent will be Saint Mary’s. The Irish will then either play Oregon/Chaminade in the second game, with the third game still to be TBA depending on how the first two rounds go in Maui.
There are also five other games that we know right now for the 2021-2022 season. Notre Dame will host Kentucky after traveling to Kentucky last year and defeating the Wildcats at Rupp Arena last December. Notre Dame and Kentucky previously agreed on a three-game series with the final game being at a neutral site the following season in 2022-2023.
In the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Irish have drawn an away game this year on November 29th where they are going to be traveling to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini. Illinois will not be the only Big Ten school that Notre Dame will be facing this upcoming year as they will also be playing the Indiana Hoosiers in the final season of the Crossroads Classic in Indianapolis on December 18th. Western Michigan will be traveling to Notre Dame on December 20th as well.
The last known matchup at the moment for Notre Dame is against Howard University. Last year Notre Dame was scheduled to play at Howard on Martin Luther King Day, but unfortunately was canceled due to COVID-19 safety precautions. Coach Brey committed to going back this upcoming season so that Howard University can still host and get the home game they signed up for with Notre Dame.
Hats off to Notre Dame for still honoring the commitment to come play at Howard because not many programs these days travel to non-power conference programs like Howard. Notre Dame will be the first school from a Power Five Conference to come play at Howard since Oregon State did in 2010.
The remaining dates for non-conference games and conference opponents for the Irish will be announced at a later time.
