ACC Basketball: Ranking all 15 head coaches entering 2021-22 season
11. Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech
Pastner likely saved his job this past season by guiding the Yellow Jackets to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since landing in Atlanta in 2016 and only their second postseason bid overall. Georgia Tech has won 17 games, including earning 11 conference victories in each of the last two years. The Jackets won the ACC Tournament crown in 2021. Pastner is 82-75 in five years with the program, although just 42-49 in conference play.
10. Brad Brownell, Clemson
Brownell has done an excellent job at Clemson, although the Tigers performance this past season possibly saved his job. Clemson went 16-8 and 10-6 in conference play, tying for fifth place, which is the team’s best finish since the 53-year-old’s first year with the program the Tigers tied for fourth. He is 201-150 with the Tigers, leading them to six postseason appearances ( 3 NCAA and 3 NIT). Clemson has reached the postseason in each of the last four years, but its NCAA Tournament appearance this past year marked their first bid since 2018.
9. Chris Mack, Louisville
Mack won 20 games his first two seasons, but the Cardinals fell to 13-7, which included going 8-5 during conference play, and did get a postseason invite. He is 57-28 overall with the Cards and 275-125 in 12 seasons overall. Mack is suspended for the first six games of the upcoming year for violating University protocol while dealing with former assistant coach Dino Gaudio’s extortion attempts.
8. Mike Young, Virginia Tech
Young parlayed a fantastic run at Wofford to get the job in Blacksburg, and the 2021 ACC coach of the year has done a pretty good job in his two seasons. Virginia Tech went 15-7 and 9-4 in conference play last season. The Hokies are 31-23 overall under Young, reaching the third round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
