Shooting Guard

AJ Griffin and Trevor Keels should find themselves in quite the battle for the shooting guard position entering the 2021-22 season. Both possess intriguing skillsets and could play the small forward spot, depending on matchups.

Griffin is a long, wiry prospect at 6-foot-6 that can rebound the ball, get to the rim and finish in traffic and create his shots off the bounce. While he isn’t exactly an efficient perimeter shooter just yet, his defense is what sets him apart.

Keels is quite the decorated prospect coming into the rotation. He’s a 2021 McDonald’s All-America, 2021 Nike Hoop Summit member, and the 2020-21 MaxPreps Virginia High School Basketball Player of the Year. He recorded six triple-doubles his senior season while averaging 28.7 ppg, .91. rpg, 7.2 apg, and 3.8 spg. His intensity is tough to match and could boost him into the starting lineup.

He’s also a former high school teammate of Jeremy Roach, which could also play a factor. Roach and Keels were quite the tandem at Paul VI in their playing days. The same could hold true now that they’re reunited in Durham.
