NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team backcourts for 2021-22 season
By Ian Mumm
With the powerful frontcourt depth North Carolina featured last season, it was widely viewed that the young backcourt would be able to smoothly ease into games and find production. However, that ended up not being the case and the Tar Heels guards struggled to put forth consistent efforts.
Former 5-star guard Caleb Love found it extremely difficult to find any kind of rhythm during the season and was only able to put forth strong shooting performances on rare occasions. Despite the coaching change this year, having a familiar face at the helm should help Love build towards a much stronger sophomore campaign than what was seen on the court in 2020.
Fellow freshman point guard RJ Davis experienced a similar difficult adjustment, but he too should see a smoother season in 2021. The saving grace for the Tar Heels throughout the season proved to be Kerwin Walton, due to his consistent production from the perimeter. While this is still an area of concern for the entire roster, the hopes it can be improved collectively across the board still exist. North Carolina will also get back lanky veteran guard Leaky Black, who still holds potential to breakout.
While not much has changed in the way in which personnel North Carolina trots out next season, the additions of Dontrez Styles and D’Marco Dunn in the backcourt ranks help to boost optimism this will be a different year. This group has the feeling of being complete and more capable of meeting preseason expectations, as well as head coach Hubert Davis.
