Rutgers Basketball: 2021-22 season preview for Scarlet Knights
Season Outlook
After last year’s historic season, media attention has seemingly turned away from Rutgers. Many seem to be doubting the Scarlet Knights’ ability to make a return appearance to the NCAA Tournament, beset by the losses of Myles Johnson and Jacob Young.
Count out these Scarlet Knights at your own peril. Johnson, Young and Montez Mathis are big losses, but having Baker and Harper back in the fold are even bigger gains, as they’re two of the most important players in recent program history. The young guns are ready to follow in their steps.
And while it will be hard to replicate Johnson’s massive production, Omoruyi was a nationally-acclaimed recruit who didn’t have much of a chance of living up to the hype in his first year in Piscataway. He’s being forgotten, but he could be in for a breakout year.
The non-conference schedule doesn’t do the Scarlet Knights a lot of favors. It’s not challenging enough to draw a lot of buzz from the selection committee and may not adequately prepare them for Big Ten play. That’s where Steve Pikiell will need to step in.
It will be tighter than last season, but Rutgers will still make the NCAA Tournament, thanks to experienced leaders and a strong conference schedule. From there, it’s anyone’s guess, but it should be another remarkable season for the Scarlet Knights.
