Big East Basketball: Projecting each team’s key player production for 2021-22
Providence: Noah Horchler and Jared Bynum
Decrease in production: Noah Horchler
As a senior, Noah Horchler started thirteen games in 2020-21, included in those thirteen were the final nine contests of the season. Horchler filled in admirably for Jimmy Nichols who missed those games with an apparent eye injury. In those final nine games, the 6’8 Horchler averaged over eleven points while playing over 33 minutes, numbers well over his season averages of six points and twenty minutes.
With the transfers of Greg Gantt Jr ( 21.4 mpg) and Jimmy Nichols (16.8 mpg) along with second-leading scorer David Duke to the pros, one would expect Horchler to get more minutes in the frontcourt. The arrival of Justin Minaya from South Carolina will put Horchler back to coming off the bench and unless there is another injury, Horchler’s production is going to fall.
Increase in production: Jared Bynum
Jared Bynum started the first eleven games of the season, until ultimately being replaced in the starting five by freshman Alyn Breed. The 2021-22 season should see Bynum return to the starting lineup for head coach Ed Cooley in the backcourt with Indiana transfer AJ Durham.
The 6’3 Breed has an opportunity to take minutes from Bynum or even take the starting position again if he could connect on more than 26 percent of his attempt from behind the arc. Regardless if Bynum starts or not, the minutes will be there for him along with the shot attempts without having to play alongside David Duke.
