Providence Basketball: 2021-22 season preview and outlook for Friars
By Joey Loose
Key Reserves
Forward – Ed Croswell (Senior)
Croswell played sparingly last season, but will certainly have the chance to contribute more than just 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He was dreadful (24%) from the charity stripe last season, but during his brief time on the court did rate very well as an offensive rebounder.
Guard – Alyn Breed (Sophomore)
Last year’s only freshman contributor, Breed will look to take a step forward in his sophomore campaign after putting up 5.0 points per game last season. Breed is still developing his game, struggling at times from outside last season, but he did earn his way into the starting lineup, and could certainly do that again moving forward.
Guard – Brycen Goodine (Junior)
A former top 100 recruit to Syracuse, Goodine begins his second season at Providence, hoping to make more of an impact off the bench. He only saw extended action in a couple of games, scoring just 26 points the whole season, though he did have 8 steals as well and could be a viable option off the bench.
Guard – Justin Minaya (Senior)
After putting up 7.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a starter at South Carolina, Minaya gets one last collegiate season with the Friars. He’ll likely be the top option off the bench, or even work his way into the starting lineup if he can keep filling stat sheets and improve his outside shot, with his physicality likely earning key minutes at least for his defense.
Forward – Rafael Castro (Freshman)
Castro is the freshman that Providence is most excited for, averaging 20 points and 16 rebounds near the end of his high school career before starring at the AAU level. He was ranked just outside the top 100 in the recruiting ranks, and his size and ability to move around the court makes him an intriguing prospect and someone who should get minutes from the get go.
