Missouri Valley Basketball: Impact of Loyola Chicago moving to Atlantic Ten
Reactions to move
Loyola’s official statement was about their excitement about joining an outstanding athletic league. Director of Athletics Steve Watson sounds excited about the move.
"“Making this transition will enhance the experience for our world-class student-athletes, and they, along with our coaches and staff, are thrilled to be joining the Atlantic 10 Conference, which is one of the most prestigious leagues in college athletics,” Watson said. “We are extremely grateful for our time in the Missouri Valley Conference, which has provided a wonderful home for Rambler Athletics for nearly a decade. We also look forward to renewing some rivalries as well as helping build the Loyola brand as a member of the A-10.”"
The Valley’s official statement wished Loyola well on their way to the new league.
"“In its 115-year history, the Missouri Valley Conference has undergone many changes in membership. The Valley will continue to remain proactive and progressive as we navigate the current collegiate environment” said Commissioner Jeff Jackson. “Loyola Chicago has been a valued member of the Missouri Valley Conference, and we wish Loyola all the best as it begins its next chapter.”"
Illinois State head basketball coach Dan Muller said he is sad to see them go. Noting that he admires what they have been able to accomplish in recent years, he’s convinced the Valley will be fine.
"“I’m sad to see them leave,” said Muller. “The Valley is obviously in great shape, with Belmont coming in. I have no concerns there. But in some ways I’m disappointed because we enjoy playing them. We’ve had some great battles.”"
Loyola is leaving the Valley respectfully and the league is taking the high road in their response to the departure.
Realignment is always a delight to one fan base and depression to another. I’ll be glad with realignment settles down.
