BYU

Last week, BYU was one of our winners, and this week they seem to have repeated the feat. The Cougars are playing second fiddle to Gonzaga in the WCC, a league that looks pretty solid after two weeks but are standing out on their own to this point. The WCC has certainly been a multi-bid conference several times before, but with the way the Cougars are playing it certainly looks like it’s going to happen again.

In week one, Cleveland State and San Diego State, two solid mid-major programs, faced defeat at BYU’s hands. This week, BYU surpassed themselves, traveling to Portland taking on #12 Oregon in a semi-neutral site game that ended very well for the Cougars. BYU won 81-49 in a game where both offense and defense shined, and Alex Barcello led the way as per usual for a BYU team dynamic in the paint. While it clearly wasn’t as big a deal, they also dispatched of Central Methodist, a non-D1 school.

Once again, the WCC is trending in a great direction after just two weeks, and it’s BYU who’s making the most waves. Certainly, nobody is a sure thing at this point, but I think we all know we’re going to see Gonzaga making another deep run in the NCAA Tournament. If this BYU team can do something like this to Oregon, maybe they could have a deep run in themselves. Nevertheless, this is one of those wins that the Selection Committee is going to see and it’s going to get the Cougars quite the push up the seed lines.

We’ve taken a close look at five winners from the past week and seen some pretty good teams already starting to play great ball in the second week of the season. Who will stand out in week three?
